Miranda Kiwi is an interdisciplinary artist studying at the School of the Art Institute of Chicago. She works on figurative ceramic sculptures and illustrations that reflect on her chaotic upbringing and struggles with intimacy. She has expanded her practice to include other mediums, such as fiber, fashion production, and book-making, and embraces experimentation.
"My practice serves as a therapeutic device to help me process my traumatic childhood and adolescence. I uncover repressed memories and document the few stories I have left from this time. I self-soothe emotional wounds by depicting my struggles and creating imagined scenarios of intimacy and interpersonal connection. I live vicariously through these scenes and experience a glimpse of these fundamentally human events that I have missed out on. I fantasize about connections and experiences that most take for granted, often turning to maladaptive daydreaming. My understanding of mundane intimacy as something purely fantastical, and my obsession with imagining such experiences, is represented by the exaggerated proportions of human figures. Much like croquis fashion sketches, the anatomy is simplified yet dramatic. This cartoon-like stylization also allows me to depict unpleasant memories while preserving the last of my childhood innocence. Motivated by a life of envy, peering in from the outside and watching others have the simple life experiences that I yearn for, my work now invites the viewer to become the voyeur. Amongst the different pieces in my collective body of work, the viewer can both see from my perspective and experience intimate interactions from the outside, or become a voyeur to my life through the documentation of my personal memories.
I combine fantastical figure illustrations with ceramic forms to portray and evoke feelings of intimacy and isolation. I often start with a pen and ink illustration, which is then translated into a three-dimensional ceramic sculpture or illustrated onto a functional vessel. I draft the figures with a clay sketch to grasp how the dramatized anatomy will fit together in the round before tackling the final ceramic piece."
Miranda has currently showcased her work in three art shows. Two of which were hosted by her highschool, Winston Churchill High School. In these shows both her ceramics and fiber works were chosen to be exhibited. The latest show, Art Bash 2024, was hosted by The School of the Art Institute of Chicago. Her piece, Perpetual Highwaters, was selected for the exhibition and displayed in the Neiman Gallery.
She has work experience in the art field as she collaborated with artists as a creative assitant for SiriSari House Films in the creation of a 20 minute stop motion film, Gourdy, and a 9 minute supplemental piece, Fear Itself. She played a hand in many of the working parts for the short film; doll creation, stop motion animation, development of scenes, and editing.
In addition, she designed graphics which were then used for the 2022-2023 season merch for her highschool's women's varsity basketball team.
Later, in 2024, she was commissioned to design logos and posters for the indie digital magazine, Midnight Pantry Magazine.
